It's hard to believe that structures are built to withstand certain forces, natural or otherwise.  Skyscrapers are designed to sway in the wind and bridges are engineered to wobble with the rumble of traffic.  Here is a time-lapse video of the Manhattan Bridge... watch it shake with every passing train.
